Fleas are resilient, hard-shelled parasites that feast on the blood of warm-blooded hosts, including dogs, cats, and other animals. In Florida, out of the roughly 2,200 known flea species worldwide, 19 species have been identified. Among these, cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) predominate, but populations of human fleas (Pulex irritans), sticktight fleas (Echidnophaga gallinacea), and a limited number of dog fleas (Ctenocephalides canis) are also present.
The cat flea is the most prevalent flea species in Florida and is encountered globally. It is the usual suspect on pets in the United States, despite its name suggesting a preference for felines. This wingless parasite boasts a reddish-brown to black hue and has a laterally compressed body designed for navigating through dense fur. Equipped with powerful legs, cat fleas excel at jumping and moving swiftly across the skin, fur, or feathers of their hosts. The University of Florida IFAS Extension notes that adult cat fleas can survive for up to 25 days on their hosts, feeding on blood necessary for egg production. They are known to cause allergic dermatitis and tapeworms in pets and, on rare occasions, can transmit diseases like murine typhus and plague to humans.
While the dog flea is more commonly found in Europe, a small number have been identified in Florida. Distinguishing them from cat fleas requires microscopic examination due to their similarity. Dog fleas are typically found on canines, wolves, and foxes across Europe, Africa, and Asia, and they can transmit the same diseases as their cat flea counterparts.
Previously more prevalent during the less hygienic conditions of the 1500s, human fleas continue to inhabit our environment, primarily targeting short-haired domestic animals like pigs and dogs. Unlike cat and dog fleas, which may incidentally feed on humans, human fleas are uniquely adapted to thrive on human hosts, despite our relatively hairless bodies. They are capable of clinging onto human skin effectively, making them a persistent concern. These fleas can transmit a range of health issues, including dermatitis, allergic reactions, tapeworms, and even the plague, underscoring the need for effective control and prevention methods.
